Three Tier Terrarium

So a couple of weeks ago I made a post about some great apothecary jars at Pottery Barn and how perfect they would be for creating a fast and easy terrarium. I was in love with the idea sooo much that I thought I should give it a try myself. I went shopping around for the right containers and came across this great site, Save On Crafts. They have a variety of apothecary style jars, as well as other kinds of containers, for incredible prices. They also have lots of different vase fillers too, a great way to add some texture and color in your home decor. I decided on this great stack of 3 apothecary jars for only $12.99! I loved that I could choose to show them separately or stacked, and that I could choose to put different materials in each jar.

Then I chose some great white/grey river rock, just one bag, also from Save On Crafts. The next step was picking out my moss - I don’t know anything about moss, nor do I have a green thumb. Just about every plant I’ve ever taken care of has died, even cacti! I found this great site, Teresa’s Plants & More that not only sold a great variety of moss and other plants, but offered a small variety of moss in a package so you can try a couple different out before committing to any one in particular for larger projects. My jars are actually relatively small in diameter so her 4 Moss Varieties in a gallon bag was perfect for my project.

I cleaned the jars out when I got them, dried them well. Tip: order your jars first so your moss isn’t just waiting around for it’s home. I then layered my river rocks in the bottom of each jar, and topped that with some of Teresa’s Organic Soil.

Then I just carefully topped the soil with the desired moss, carefully pressing them into the soil. Make sure to adjust the amount of soil so you can fit your moss into it’s new home comfortably.

And that’s it! It was a super fast, fun and easy project - and relatively mess free. Best of all, with the great online resources, it was also an inexpensive way to brighten up my guest bathroom counter and add a little natural texture. The green and dark brown soil looks lovely against the natural cream counter and backsplash, dontcha think? - Rhiannon
